Betro retains seat on Housing Authority

June 16, 2014

Peter Betro won another seat on the Housing Authority in the June 7 town election, on a write-in campaign that garnered him 153 votes.

His closest runner-up, for write-in votes, was former Town Moderator Stephen Sullivan, who received 76 votes. Sullivan launched a small write-in campaign. Sullivan has not served in a town-wide elected post since losing the Moderator’s seat in 1996 to Jim Brady.

Betro also operates Betro’s Pharmacy in downtown Walpole.

Betro had been up for re-election to the Housing Authority this year, but failed to return his nomination papers on time. His seat, which was the only Housing Authority seat up for re-election this year, was then up for grabs to a write-in contender. The seat is for a five-year term.

The Housing Authority is one of the most autonomous parts of town government, in that its budget and operations are mostly under the control of the state, rather than the town. It operates a few affordable housing facilities in Walpole. One member of the Housing Authority is state-appointed.

Gov. Deval Patrick has recently proposed consolidating the state’s 240 housing authorities into 6 regional authorities to make them more efficient and more accountable. That proposal so far has not been acted upon by the legislature.
