Override results by precinct

July 20, 2012

Here are the override results by precinct. All RTMs from Precincts 3, 6, and 7 should vote against appropriating the $3 million override at Monday night’s Special Town Meeting because they must represent the will of their constituents. Likewise, all RTMs from other precincts should vote “Yes.”

I fully expect that many RTMs will be away on vacation, which means that Town Meeting may not be able to reach a quorum.

No, actually Sam, under our form of government, be it town, state, or federal, representatives do not have to vote in lockstep with the “will of their constituents” (I got the phrase correct- yes?). We elect our representatives to represent our best interests. That’s why they’re called representatives, instead of proxies. If they were proxies, then we tell them how to vote and they would be expected to adhere to it.

This is basic Poli Sci 101. They are allowed to, and expected to, vote their conscience and vote for what they believe will be the best interests of their constituents.

Town Meeting is solidly behind the override. The vote is over; it really is time to move on.
