Public comment period open on commuter rail study

November 26, 2011

Walpole residents and officials are rapidly mobilizing to oppose the proposed developments at Patriot Place near the South Walpole line. The Kraft family, which owns Patriot Place, Gillette Stadium, and the New England Patriots, are pushing for an expansion of the MBTA commuter rail through parts of South Walpole, leading directly to Patriot Place. The Krafts are also proposing the construction of large buildings and a wind turbine in Foxboro directly next to residential neighborhoods in South Walpole.

Mirick O’Connell, the law firm that recently released a study suggesting a pilot program of expanding the commuter rail through Walpole to Patriot Place, is asking residents and local officials to offer comment on the study before it is officially submitted to the MBTA. The study is available here.

“We have received feedback from several communities that they would like the opportunity to provide comment on the study prior to its submission to the MBTA, plarmed for the end of December,” attorney John Mirick wrote in a letter this month to State Rep. Dan Winslow (R-Norfolk.) “We are happy to accept written comments on matters […] that you feel the MBTA should take into account if it decides to move forward with a pilot program,” Mirick wrote.

Written comments can be submitted to the office of State Rep. Winslow by December 23.  Submitted comments will then be forwarded to Mirick O’Connell and will be included in the study’s appendix when it is submitted to the MBTA.

PLEASE we urge EVERYONE to write to State Rep Winslow & Attorney Merrick. This is a serious situation that we all need to act on NOW. “We know who” has an agenda that he is steamrolling through, First, a NEW commuter rail proposal (to replace the one done last year by the MBTA showing that this IS a bad idea). The commuter rail will connect many rails to the west, so that they all go through South Walpole & end up at Patriots Place (for the common good?) . It doesn’t seem to matter that a full time high speed commuter rail running through South Walpole would have MANY negative effects on our neighborhood & bring down the prices of our homes as well. I want to praise OUR selectmen for their support & the letters to be sent to Attorney Merrick & Governor Patrick.
Second, is the zoning change that is being requested by Kraft, for an area right up to South Walpole…With the recent approval of casinos in our state, it’s very clear what the next step is here. PLEASE COME to the Foxboro Planning Board meeting, to be held on Thursday, December 8 at 8 pm at the Foxboro Town Hall (40 south st). Attorney Merrick, who declined coming to last night’s Walpole Selectmen meeting, should be at this meeting. There will be discussions about the commuter rail & the proposed zoning changes. PLEASE MAKE YOUR VOICES HEARD!
