Jones won’t be on Finance Committee

August 29, 2011

Walpole may have been unable to avert Hurricane Irene this weekend, but town officials will avoid what had the potential to be another hurricane in the FY 2013 budget year: Russell Jones has removed his name from the running for a spot on the Finance Committee.

Jones, who ran unsuccessfully for selectman this year, is well known for being a conservative, and publicly called for more spending constraint in the town budget during his campaign. He came in second place in the final tally for the one open selectman’s seat.

After his surprisingly strong finish in the election, Town Moderator Jon Rockwood considered appointing Jones to the Finance Committee to replace Mark Gallivan. He was considered a top contender, although Rockwood wouldn’t divulge who else was being considered.

But Jones, citing work constraints that are apparently keeping him very busy, told Town Moderator Jon Rockwood last week he didn’t think he would be able to serve on the Committee after all. Jones left the Conservation Commission a few years ago largely due to the same reason. He runs Jones Contracting, Inc., an excavation contracting company in East Walpole.

Rockwood said he is still seeking a replacement for Gallivan, and a decision is expected within the next week.
