Mansfield will pay you for cost-saving proposals

March 10, 2011

The Town of Mansfield will now pay a cash reward to any citizen who proposes an idea for cost-savings in the municipal budget, according to The Sun Chronicle. The reward is open to all members of the public and all town employees except for the town manager, selectmen and municipal department heads.

The Sun Chronicle says it “may be the first of its kind for a local government in Massachusetts,” even though this type of plan exists at the state and federal level already.

It would be a great idea if Walpole Town Hall was to implement a similar program here. Give a true fiscal conservative a red pen, a copy of the town budget, and 48 hours, and I believe they could balance the town budget without raising any taxes AND come up with a surplus. Too bad we do not have any fiscal conservatives running Town Hall.
